SWEDEN part 3 - The beautiful Dalecarlia

The County or province of Dalecarlia (Dalarna), is where the history of Sweden begun with the dynasty of "rebel" Gustav Vasa. Yes, it is true. The first King of a "united Sweden" came from this part of Sweden. Here in Dalecarlia, you can visit places where time seem to have been standing still. Before King Gustav's time, there were Chieftains, or Kings if you like, running their domains. What is Sweden today, was divided into a lot of small parts. At this time the southern part of Sweden was occupied by the Danes and there was an ongoing war.

It is from Dalecarlia where two of Sweden's most dear and famous painters had their homes and studios. I am thinking about Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn (Bruno Liljefors 1860-1939, was born in Uppsala). Dalecarlian is breathtakingly beautiful with its landscape and picturesque architecture. I wish I could show you more than a few samples.

There is a lot of "Out-Door" museums, where you can see how people used to live, in Dalecarlia. Thanks to the painter Anders Zorn (1860-1920), who took a special interest in the past, there are more saved than it would have been otherwise. The picture above was taken the day after the Swedish Midsummer celebration. What you see in front of  the buildings,  is a version of a Midsummer-pole. I believe they have put a garland of leafs and flowers around the flag-pole. It was quite a bit livelier here a couple of days ago.

The above is a collection of Zorn's old houses, which are on display at the outskirt of town of Mora in Dalecarlia. The farms were build in timber and the roofs mostly clad with grass. Buildings were placed in a square, like a small village, to be able to more easily protect them from intruders. Animals and people were living very close together to keep warm in the very cold winters in this part of Sweden.

The home of Anders Zorn (1860-1920) is located in Mora. In the garden there is a few sculptures made by his friend Carl Eldh, one of Sweden's most beloved sculptors. Anders Zorn loved to gather his friends here at "Zorngarden". Among them was also the painter Carl Larsson (1854-1919).

Anders Zorn also had one of the very old timber houses in his back-yard. It was some times used as an atelier and part of a painting. This gave him an authentic light when he painted his scenes from the indoors. The atmosphere in his paintings is incredible well catched on canvas.
