Sweden part 2 - About Vikings

Since we started on the country-side of Sweden, I like to continue to show more of this lovely country in the Summer. At visits in June 2001 and June 2002  there was more time to drive around and refresh memories of nature and history. Some places were new to me. Places I have wanted to se when I still lived there, but never got around to. And there were fairly new discoveries to see like the Viking findings and museum in Tanum, located  in the northern part of the province Bohuslan by the West-coast of Sweden.

Ph Sweden Where

Above are the names of the places in Tanum, Bohuslan, where you are able to study these Viking-stories in nature as they are painted on old granite rocks in the ground. They tell about victories in war, describing feuds, travels, hunting expeditions and romance. Perhaps Leif Ericsson went from here to Iceland to continue further West?  These places really start our imagination running.

The first "grafiti" rock-carvings here has been found quite by accident, bleached from the sun and some almost  hidden but  preserved by moss. The color you see here today is there to make it easier for us to see.

Vikinghem

Yes, Vikings had nice furniture carved from wood. I believe that in
the winter-months the bed was made up with fur from wolf and bear.

The Viking's era  ended in approximately the 11th century A.D., the end of the Bronze-age (1800 B.C.-500 A.D.). It is a bit uncertain when the era  started and how many they were since the remains of where they lived are so few. But new findings are made all the time. The Viking-travels stopped. The depending on the sea lessened and they became more or less self-sufficient as stationary farmers  and merchants trading among themselves. They had  their own small "kingdoms" and had Chiefs who ruled.

From a later time in the Swedish history,  you can se the Fortress of Marstrand, the sailing capitol of Sweden,  located North of Gothenburg, west of Kungalv in Bohuslan. A former defense post against Norway and Denmark. Power went back and fourth between the Scandinavian countries.

LackoFront

Lacko

In the days of the Renaissance,  architecture and "homesteads" changed drastically for the noble men connected to the Swedish court. They were given domains as a gift for favors to the King. This included that the people living in the area had to pay taxes in form of work, crop or perhaps as soldiers in the war that went on in Europe at this time (for 30 years).

This is the castle of Lacko, in the Province of Vastergotland, by the southern part of Lake Vaenern. It is a very popular tourist-spot and filled with history. In some summer evenings there are concerts, theatre or opera  in the court-yard. Lacko was first build in the 14th century, but was extended in the beginning of the 17th century to the Baroque style castle we can see today. At this very romantic place, and you are also welcome to dance around the Midsummer-pole a Friday around the 24th of June. The date varies from year to year.
